MARKS & Spencer is planning to offer mortgages targeting first-time buyers as well as other purchasers.

M&S Bank said it would bring an ‘M&S-standard service’ to those seeking home loans ‘with competitive rates across a range of terms’ from early next year, subject to approval. M&S Bank, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary, also offers current accounts, credit cards and loans.

Sue Fox, the bank’s head, said: ‘We’re incredibly excited to be able to bring this M&S-standard service to customers whether they’re making their first or final step on the property ladder, and for every move in between.’

Rachel Springall, of Moneyfacts.co.uk, said loyal M&S customers ‘may find it an enticing prospect’ and it would be ‘interesting’ to see what sort of perks the bank would offer.

A price war between mortgage lenders appears to be over as there are signs rates are edging up with some ultra-low deals being pulled.
